G20 Global Marine Environment Protection (GMEP) Initiative

On Sharing Best Practices to Protect the Marine Environment, to Prevent Accidents related to Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration and Development, as well as Marine Transportation, and to Deal with Their Consequences


In Italy the offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities have lasted over 50 years, always conducted with the maximum respect for the workers’ safety and protection of the environment. Our Country believes it is essential to enhance mining and energy resources with full respect of the environment and the latest safety standards. Based on this experience and due to the nature of its strategic position with respect to the Mediterranean Sea, Italy is prepared to do its part by acting to increase the cooperation with all the Countries involved in offshore mining activities.

  • Oil Spill Response

    Material covering the regulatory, operational and enviromental context of managing a marine oil spill. Includes material on capping devices and industry mutual response.

  • Accident Prevention

    Included here are descriptions of frameworks, regulations, guidelines and practices that the different G20 countries have found helpful in preventing, preparing for and dealing with the consequences of offshore oil and gas accidents.
